KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (KUSKOP), through the Malaysia Cooperative Societies Commission, will continue to provide support to Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Bhd (ANGKASA) as the apex body that represents the country’s cooperative movement at the international level, which is the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA).

Deputy Minister of Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development (KUSKOP) Datuk Muslimin Yahaya said that at the global level recently, Datuk Kamarudin Ismail from ANGKASA defended his position as an ICA Asia Pacific board member.

In addition, he said Angkasa president Datuk Seri Abdul Fattah Abdullah has also been elected as ICA vice-president for the term 2021 to 2025.

“The success of this national representation is important to the cooperative movement in Malaysia, especially in bringing the voice of 14,834 cooperatives that include 7.08 million members to the global level,” he said at Dewan Negara today.

Muslimin was replying to Senator Datuk Mohd Ridhwan Mohd Ali who asked about the government’s efforts to further strengthen the role of cooperatives in Malaysia through collaborations with other cooperatives at the international level.

He further said that ANGKASA has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with international cooperative bodies such as the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Ltd, one of India’s biggest cooperative societies, in the supply of urea nano fertilisers to increase harvest through increased productivity.

In addition, he noted that ANGKASA has also established collaborations with South Korea’s National Agricultural Cooperative Federation in developing the dairy cattle industry, including training in the field of veterinary.

“In an effort to further strengthen the role of the cooperative movement at the international level in the future, ANGKASA will collaborate with the Cambodia Muslim Development Foundation, specifically to help improve the economic status of the local community through the development of mosque parish cooperatives.

“Also, collaborations are underway with the government of Eswatini (Swaziland) to support the development of effective school cooperatives,” he said.
