TERENGGANU EYES ANNUAL 4.6 PCT GROWTH FOR ITS AGRICULTURE SECTOR

09/08/2022 04:55 PM

KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 9 (Bernama) -- Terengganu has targeted an annual gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 4.6 per cent for the state’s agriculture sector.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said this is to ensure food security in the state, adding that focus will be quickly given to the production of commodities such as rice, fish, meat, and vegetables.

“The agriculture sector has been targeted to grow 4.6 percent and contribute between 15 and 20 per cent to the state’s GDP.

“We need to utilise all of the 475,000 square kilometres for agriculture use in the pursuit of food security," he said at the Terengganu Sejahtera conference here today.

The three-day conference, which starts today, involves civil servants in the state and aims to provide guidance in Terengganu’s economic development.

According to Ahmad Samsuri, paddy production is only at about 73,000 tonnes a year, but the state’s 1.3 million people consume over 164,000 tonnes.

The same goes for fish landing, with the state recording about 40,000 tonnes a year, or 2.8 per cent of the national total. “This should not happen as we have the longest coast in the country,” he added.
