KOTA KINABALU, July 13 (Bernama) -- More than 20 industry leaders will come together at a conference here next month to discuss trade, economy, market potential and innovations within the East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) ports to improve economic competitiveness.

To be held from Aug 2-4, the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Exhibition and Conference 2022 is hosted by the Sabah Ports Authority and Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd (SPSB).

“The event is a major highlight among the BIMP-EAGA community and is highly anticipated by those following developments in BIMP-EAGA market,” SPSB managing director Datuk Ng Kiat Min told a press conference today.

The ports, shipping and logistics exhibition and conference, with the theme “BIMP-EAGA: The road to R.I.S.E. (Resilient, Inclusive, Sustainable and Economically Competitive)” is supported by the BIMP-EAGA Business Council and co-organised by Transport Events Management and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Malaysia.

Seven sessions are lined up and will cover areas related to investment opportunities, transformation strategies of EAGA ports, container shipping and movement within EAGA, port automation, and future direction and initiatives for ports, shipping and logistics in Malaysia.

Ng said participants will learn about port development and the trade perspective from the private sector -- BIMP-EAGA Business Council -- in addition to being able to gather with like-minded professionals for networking purposes.

"There will be a concurrent trade exhibition of 40 international and local companies and sponsors showcasing port and transport-related state-of-the-art products, services and latest technologies for ports, shipping and logistics," she added.

Meanwhile, she said Sapangar Bay Container Port can be a prime transhipment hub for the EAGA region, and its strategic location along the main shipping route of the East Asian sea trade and the centre of the BIMP-EAGA region has made it a preferable route.

"We celebrate a high level of friendship and see each other as strategic partners and important neighbours. Through dialogues, we hope to see opportunities to synergise the strength of EAGA ports and explore cooperation to enhance trade facilitation especially in enhancing logistics capacities for a cost-effective and efficient supply chain,” she said.
