UM, Western Digital ink MoU for academic cooperation

PETALING JAYA, June 29 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaya (UM) and Western Digital Tech and Regional Center (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  today to gain access to expertise and research opportunities through knowledge exchange.

UM deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Dr Yatimah Alias said that the industry-university collaboration is a critical component of the innovation process, providing a myriad of benefits to both the university and Western Digital. 

“It is a privilege to have a global industry player like Western Digital to be one of our important partners. Western Digital has a long history in the electronics industry as an integrated circuit maker and a storage products company.

“As Malaysia’s premier university, UM continues to lead on multiple fronts and capitalise on its many talents and strengths to forge new collaborations, partnerships, and engagements with local and global industries institutions to ensure that we remain at the leading edge,” she said.

Meanwhile Higher Education director-general Prof Datuk Dr Husaini Omar said that such MoUs were good for the common goal of suite of employability advantages and globally recognised qualifications.

“These MoUs move us further to work together more closely to our common goal of a suite of employability advantages and globally recognised qualifications by bringing together many important activities, such as the promotion of academic and educational exchange between organisations, educational institutions, and individuals,” he said.

The MoU between Western Digital and Universiti Malaya was signed by Professor Dr Yatimah Alias  and Managing Director of Western Digital Tech and Regional Center Raghu Bathamenadan at Western Digital’s Kuala Lumpur Center Of Excellences today.

The collaboration is to create breakthrough innovation that is inspired by the convergence of human potential and digital transformation while reinforcing academia-industry partnerships that aim to promote, support, transform communities and catalyse change in the technology world.
