KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- The Petrochemical Sustainability Conference (PSC) 2022 will focus on three key areas -- the decarbonisation of operations, circular economy practices and enablers supporting the transition, to support the sustainability journey, the Malaysian Petrochemicals Association (MPA) president Akbar Md Thayoob said.

The conference, scheduled on September 13 and 14, is MPA’s first international conference on petrochemical sustainability, focusing on the challenges and how key industry stakeholders can navigate the transition toward net-zero carbon emissions.

Akbar said the event aimed to support the regional petrochemical industry and its value chain through this challenging time by facilitating knowledge sharing on key climate-related topics impacting their overall business sustainability.

“The conference would enable petrochemical players to restructure or reset their respective transition base where necessary, allowing their latest efforts to be streamlined with the industry’s identified pathways,” he said in a statement today.

The inaugural event, taking place alongside Southeast Asia’s largest exhibition supporting the oil and gas industry, OGA x MOGSEC in Kuala Lumpur.

PSC 2022 will gather over 50 thought leaders and over 500 delegates from Malaysia and the region and is anticipated to draw strong interest from petrochemical producers, consumers, academic institutions, policymakers, non-profit organisations and other stakeholders.

Conference attendees will also learn about the latest technologies that can support the industry transition and have the opportunity to interact with key policymakers.

“In doing so, we will ultimately be able to support the overall climate aspirations for Malaysia and the region.

“Our main mission is to champion the petrochemical industry, especially in Malaysia, by delivering value through our advocacy work and consultation.

“At the same time, help shapes public policies that support business continuity, investment, sustainability, employment, innovation and the environment,” Akbar said.

Meanwhile, Informa Markets Malaysia Country General Manager Gerard Leeuwenburgh said the conference would create meaningful dialogue and engagement among leading stakeholders when the regional oil and gas community reconvenes face-to-face in OGA x MOGSEC.

PSC 2022 will be the first in a series of subsequent biennial conferences, providing a platform for MPA members and beyond to engage with key stakeholders on a regular basis with identified and agreed agenda and missions to be achieved for each sustainability conference series until arriving at net-zero carbon emission by 2050.
