Food diplomacy: Agrofood SMEs to explore overseas markets

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 13 -- The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries (MAFI) will assist more agrofood-based small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to enter overseas markets.

MAFI secretary-general Datuk Haslina Abdul Hamid said among others, this perspective is to help increase the productivity of local SMEs in order to meet external market demand.

"Discussions are also held with eight agriculture counsellors abroad as well as the government and the private sector there to establish food diplomacy," she said after launching the export of World Prominence Sdn Bhd's products to the United Kingdom and European markets here today.

She said under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), MAFI through the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) would forge strategic partnerships with overseas marketing agents appointed to promote and match local businesses with foreign industry players to increase export demand and orders.

"Under the 12MP as well, various public-private partnership initiatives are carried out by FAMA and MAFI's Business Development and Investment Division to bring local products abroad," she said.

Earlier, she ‘flagged off’ World Prominence Sdn Bhd's products for export to the United Kingdom and European markets at the company's headquarters in Batu Caves here today.

A total of 787 cartons of pre-mixed spices from SUDEE and Maznah brands produced by World Prominence Sdn Bhd will be marketed overseas.

"Export orders to the United Kingdom are currently on voyage and are scheduled to arrive in early January next year while export shipments to Europe are expected to depart on Dec 16," said Haslina.

She said the product would be marketed through three e-commerce platforms in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany as well as being sold in selected supermarkets in the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland.

Haslina said in order to penetrate foreign markets, local entrepreneurs need to innovate to cater to the taste-buds of the market they want to penetrate to gain customer acceptance.

Meanwhile, FAMA in a statement stated that World Prominence Sdn Bhd is one of the participants in the export development programme organised by MAFI and has received export orders worth more than RM200,000 to be marketed to the United Kingdom and Europe.

The manufacturer of pre-mixed spice products under the SUDEE and Maznah brands today launched the export of 132 cartons for the United Kingdom market and 655 cartons for the European market.
