07/12/2021 05:44 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 7 -- The virtual UK Smart Cities Mission to Malaysia will be an ideal platform for stakeholders in the United Kingdom (UK) and Malaysia to meet, exchange expertise and explore the scope for collaboration in smart cities development.

At the virtual soft launch of the mission today, British High Commissioner to Malaysia Charles Hay MVO said Malaysia is an important strategic partner for the UK, including in smart cities.

“We have collaborated successfully with KPKT (Ministry of Housing and Local Government) to produce the Malaysia Smart Cities Handbook and we have great initiatives under the Global Future Cities Programme, UK-PACT and the new Urban Climate Action Programme,” he said.

Organised by the British High Commission in Malaysia, in partnership with the Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT), the UK Smart Cities Mission to Malaysia 2022 will be held virtually from Feb 22 to Feb 24, 2022 with the aim to increase awareness and share UK smart cities expertise by showcasing the successful implementation of smart cities solutions from cities across the UK.

MIGHT said the three-day mission would also gather leading thought leaders, ecosystem builders and smart cities solution providers from the UK and Malaysia.

“The mission creates a platform for stakeholders to exchange expertise and explore collaboration scopes in smart cities development, aligning to the seven focus areas outlined in Malaysia Smart Cities Framework.

“The seven focus areas are Smart Economy, Smart Living, Smart Environment, Smart People, Smart Government, Smart Mobility and Smart Digital Infrastructure,” it said.

MIGHT chief executive officer and president Datuk Dr Mohd Yusoff Sulaiman, in his keynote address, said Malaysia is always pushing for best practices in developing and implementing sustainable and green technologies initiatives at both the national and state levels.

“We will continue to draw upon our extensive international collaborative experience to provide a strategic platform for the public and private sectors to bring together resources and expertise in developing strategic industries and sustainable development best practices through science, technology and innovation application,” he said.

A high-level panel forum alongside the soft launch sparked conversation on urban planning, design standards and technology adoption.

Panellists included senior representatives from the British Standards Institution, Connected Places Catapult, Digital Penang and PlanMalaysia.
