KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 16 -- SIRIM Bhd’s Medical Device Innovation Centre (MDIC), which officially opened last month, will expand its capability so that it can act as an enabler to strengthen the country’s medical device ecosystem.
SIRIM Bhd president and chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Sabirin Arshad said the MDIC will focus on areas such as research and development, measurement and calibration, testing and certification as well as technical training to develop the standard of the medical device industry in Malaysia.
“Three main programmes implemented by MDIC involve the application of technology for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), adoption of Industry 4.0 technology by major companies, and the main vendor project which will be participated by multinational companies and local SMEs,” he said in a statement today.
MDIC will also implement a medical device incubator, open lab and “teaching factory” which will enable the cooperation between the public and private sectors.
The SIRIM chief also noted comments by Minister of International Trade and Industry Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali in Parliament today on special incentives for the medical device industry.
He added that in developing the medical industry ecosystem in the country, SIRIM will also focus on the sustainability agenda in line with the aims of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) as well as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
