MPC CONTINUES MISSION TO SPEARHEAD PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVES

01/11/2021 02:13 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1  -- The Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC), an agency under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), continues to drive its mission in spearheading productivity improvement initiatives through various digital platforms in expanding reach to target groups.

MITI Deputy Minister Datuk Lim Ban Hong said the MPC continues to move forward by implementing the initiatives outlined under the Malaysia Productivity Blueprint (MPB) in tackling the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, in line with the Shared Prosperity Vision (WKB) 2030.

Based on these strategic thrusts, nine Productivity Nexus were established under the supervision of the MPC Delivery Management Office (DMO) to increase productivity as targeted under the MPB.

"The MPC has passed the national economic stage by supporting MITI in addressing all global, regional and national challenges.

“Since its inception in 1966, the MPC has played an important role in enhancing Malaysia's productivity and competitiveness," he said in a keynote address in conjunction with the MPC's 55th anniversary celebration.

He said labour productivity recorded an impressive growth of 13.6 per cent in the second quarter of 2021 compared with -16.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2020 following the government's continued policy impetus to support business confidence and high-export performance.

Overall employee productivity per employee was at an average rate of 1.2 per cent under the 11th Malaysia Plan (11MP) and was expected to increase at an average rate of 3.6 per cent for the 12MP.

"The addition of two new Productivity Nexus, namely construction and logistics services announced in the 12MP proves that the MPC remains relevant through its role as the MPB secretariat in coordinating and monitoring the implementation of national productivity leap initiatives," he said.

The MPC has conducted research in the field of productivity measurement at the national and sectoral levels since 1990 where information on productivity measurement has been published in the Productivity Report -- Malaysia's main source of reference, especially among industries.

Besides, the MPC is an institutional partner of international bodies such as the Institute for Management Development (IMD) and World Economic Forum (WEF) in publishing the World Competitiveness Yearbook and Global Competitiveness Report.

"The MPC is also the secretariat and the main mover of various initiatives of the Special Task Force to Facilitate Business (PEMUDAH) which seeks to improve ease of doing business in Malaysia.

“The Ease of Doing Business report published by the World Bank has ranked Malaysia as the 12th best in the world. This places Malaysia among the successful countries for initiatives to facilitate the regulation of the business environment," he said.

Meanwhile, MPC chairman Ram Ganesan Karthigasu said since its inception in 1966, the MPC had continued to intensify efforts to cultivate a culture of productivity among industries and society to become more productive and competitive at the national and international levels.

"The MPC will continue to provide strong support to MITI in its efforts to make Malaysia a preferred investment destination and the most competitive trading nation to achieve Malaysia's aspirations to become a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable country," he added.
