UNIVERSITY OF MALAYA, SIRIM TEAM UP TO COMMERCIALISE RESEARCH FINDINGS

06/10/2021 07:35 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 -- The University of Malaya (UM) and SIRIM Tech Venture Sdn Bhd (STV), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SIRIM Bhd, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to commercialise UM researchers’ research results in the market.

UM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohd Hamdi Abd Shukor said through the agreement, the innovative products would be commercialised by SIRIM through the transformation of ideas into businesses that could contribute to economic growth.

“This collaboration marks the beginning of idea generation that would be further developed and the promotion of the work of UM researchers towards producing technology that meets the high standards of Malaysia’s industry,” he said in a joint statement from the university and SIRIM today.

The MoU was signed by Mohd Hamdi and SIRIM group president and chief executive Datuk Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Sabirin said through the collaboration, STV would provide advisory services and technology commercialisation services to UM which could assist university researchers in the commercialisation of their innovations.

“STV and UM have agreed to work together in the field of human capital capacity building through training, workshops, educational seminars, and talks.

“Besides that, STV also offers various services under business commercialisation, including Technology Assessment (Certified Patent Assessment Analyst) and Market Feasibility Study, as an added value for this joint venture,” he said.

According to him, STV is currently actively establishing cooperation from various universities, industries, agencies and research institutions in the field of technology commercialisation.

“SIRIM hopes that STV will be better known as a technology commercialisation entity and as a reference point for the industry in the future.

“This will be a major milestone for SIRIM in increasing the rate of technology adoption and marketability of innovations,” he said.
