KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 30 -- The Bumiputera Youth Entrepreneurship (TUBE) programme, implemented by SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp) since 2014, registered RM135.7 million in sales as of July 2021.

Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives (MEDAC) Tan Sri Noh Omar said 90 per cent of the youths participating in the programme have become entrepreneurs.

“MEDAC is ready to provide them loans and if they want to grow their business from micro to small and medium industries (SMIs) and needs more capital, we have TEKUN (TEKUN Nasional), PUNB (Perbadanan Usahawan Nasional Bhd), Bank Rakyat and SME Corp.

“I have already told agencies that they should be given ‘fast track’ and privileges to smoothen the loan process. We want them, who started their business from their house, to succeed until they can open a factory,” he told reporters after the TUBE 8.0 opening ceremony today.

TUBE 8.0 will be implemented online, involving 600 participants, with an allocation of RM9 million.

The event also saw the memorandum of understanding (MOU) exchange ceremony between SME Corp with eight local public universities namely Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) as well as Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) for the organising of the TUBE@IPT programme.

Participants of the TUBE@IPT programme will be given entrepreneurial skills training, covering the field of management, financial, digital marketing, including the provision of BissCounselors who provides business-related expert advisory services.

Participants of the programme will be monitored for 12 months with an allocation of RM15,000 each to kickstart their business and MEDAC aims to produce 160 university graduate entrepreneurs through the programme.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Higher Education Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad said such collaboration is able to foster creative thinking among graduates and undergraduates, including providing exposure to the real world of business.

“I am confident that this programme will be able to produce more viable and highly resilient young entrepreneurs in a competitive market.

“I also hope that through programmes like this, the financial burden of student and graduate entrepreneurs can be alleviated,” she said.

She added that she hopes the programme could be expanded next year to universities and polytechnics that are still not involved.

To date, a total of 5,643 youth entrepreneurs, out of 6,268 TUBE programme participants, have been successfully produced nationwide based on the businesses they operated, creating 11,767 job opportunities.
