Malaysian Rubber Council to advocate sustainable practices at World Expo 2020 in Dubai

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 3 -- The Malaysian Rubber Council (MRC) plans to advocate sustainable practices across the value chain when it participates in the World Expo 2020 in Dubai from Oct 1, 2021 to March 31, 2022.

Embracing the theme of ‘Energising Sustainability’, the Malaysia Pavilion aims to capture the country’s commitment to ensuring a secure and sustainable future by balancing socio-economic progress with environmental concerns, MRC told Bernama in a statement.

It said that sustainable agri-commodities, including rubber, will be featured permanently in the pavilion display and the Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities (MPIC) will be leading the two-week-long trade and business programmes on agri-commodity.

“The Malaysia Pavilion will host 26 weekly thematic business programmes throughout the expo to promote its sustainable industries,” said MRC.

Chief executive officer Nurul Islam Mohamed Yusoff said the government, through MRC, is committed to working with industry players to produce sustainable natural rubber, grown in a way that protects the environment and the people while meeting the rising demand for the commodity.

“Throughout the years, the Malaysian Rubber Board has developed natural rubber-based products such as Seismic Bearings, Rubberised Road, and Ekoprena which are environment-friendly, sustainable, and have a low carbon footprint.

“The World Expo 2020 will be a great platform to promote these green rubber products to the world,” he said.

MRC will also be launching the Malaysian Rubber Products Virtual Showcase (MaRViS), a reliable online platform that facilitates online business engagements between international buyers and Malaysian rubber product manufacturers, capitalising on the huge reach of the expo, he said.

“At a time when the world is struggling to adapt to the many changes in day-to-day business caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this platform is hoped to set the wheels in motion to encourage the industry players to embrace digitalisation in their business dealings.

“This virtual platform is able to provide a holistic online experience for international buyers and it will have some interesting features including virtual exhibitions, live chat and online business matching,” Nurul Islam said.

He also said that important events such as the e-Global Sourcing Mission (e-GSM) and online seminars will also be held on MaRViS’ platform.

The first phase of MaRViS will go live this month, while the platform’s grand launch is expected to take place in January 2022.
