KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 2 -- Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad (PruBSN), through its charity arm, PruBSN Prihatin  distributes nearly 15,000 PruBSN Microtakaful Jariyah (MTJ) plans to low-income households in several states, to enable the group to have access to free insurance coverage.

Its deputy president, Anita Menon said this initiative is a continuation of its previous efforts in reaching out to the poor with the cooperation of  the Implementation Coordination Unit (ICU) of the Prime Minister’s Department.

In March, a total of 1,588 low-income households in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan became the first group to be offered the plan.

“The distribution of MTJ is carried out in stages covering the Central Zone (Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Labuan) and the Southern Zone (Negeri Sembilan, Melaka and Johor).

"It also involves the Northern Zone (Perak, Penang, Kedah and Perlis), the East Coast Zone (Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu) as well as Sabah and Sarawak and 28,000 beneficiaries have been targeted this year," she said in a statement today.

Through MTJ, which is largely funded by zakat funds, PruBSN provides 12-months basic life protection coverage for selected breadwinners at no cost.

"This means that recipients will enjoy a death benefit of RM10,000, where payment will go directly into their bank account," she said, adding that RM2.24 million has been allocated for the cause this year.

Anita added, “PruBSN is celebrating its 15th year anniversary this year. As Malaysia’s number one family takaful operator*, we remain focused on protecting the health and financial wellbeing of Malaysians to help build a stronger community. We have been steadfast in serving the community for the past 15 years and will continue to make healthcare more affordable and accessible in the years ahead.”

The selection process for this programme is regulated by ICU JPM which is responsible for managing eKasih, the national poverty database in Malaysia.

Datuk Nor Azri Bin Zulfakar, Director General of ICU JPM commented on this unique, first-of-its-kind initiative. “We are truly honoured to be a part of this initiative with PruBSN Prihatin to enable low-income groups in Malaysia to obtain basic coverage and protection in times of need. For the past 50 years, we have been striving and promoting unity and inclusivity amongst the Malaysian. We look forward to continuously working together with PruBSN Prihatin to make a difference within our community, especially that we are also celebrating our 50th anniversary this year
