KOTA KINABALU, July 29 -- Desa Keningau Livestock Industries Sdn Bhd (DKLI) is targeting an annual production of 8.5 million litres of cow's milk and 1,000 head of cattle which is equivalent to 500 tonnes of beef.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor said to achieve the target, DKLI would undertake an expansion project costing RM87.83 million to increase its capacity to accommodate 2,000 head of dairy and beef cattle.

DKLI was set up after Desa Cattle (Sabah) Sdn Bhd, a wholly state-owned company, took over the Keningau Integrated Livestock Centre (KILC) from the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) on July 1.

"Desa Cattle has taken over this project, hence, we hope the state's growing dairy cattle industry will complement the existing Desa dairy breeding project in Kundasang which is now running smoothly," he said in a statement here today.

Hajiji said the initial amount of capital investment required for the development of the project was estimated at RM118 million and divided into two phases.

The first phase of the project under SEDIA amounting to RM57.3 million was completed on Aug 19, 2013 through federal funding.
