SABAH ADOPTS MBEF TO HELP BUSINESSES FACE ECONOMIC CHALLENGES

23/07/2021 03:50 PM

KOTA KINABALU, July 23 -- The Sabah Ministry of Industrial Development (MID) will be incorporating the Malaysia Business Excellence Framework (MBEF) criteria in assisting businesses to achieve sustainability and competitiveness in the face of current economic challenges.

Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Dr Joachim Gunsalam said this was important because an excellence-oriented culture would drive businesses to face changes and accelerate their growth, apart from responding quickly to challenges, especially the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said most businesses were affected and saddled with difficulties due to business closures, old business models being taken over by new business models, difficulties in attracting new investors or investors withdrawing their investments due to changes in business models.

"We are adopting MBEF in Sabah so that our standards are the same as the national standards as well as those of 84 countries that apply the same standards, as this can improve the quality (of businesses) in Sabah," he told reporters here, today.

He said MBEF was also adopted to evaluate and identify organisations participating in the Quality Management Excellence Award (QMEA) introduced in 1990 by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Earlier, Joachim, who is also the Sabah Industrial Development Minister, launched the Sabah Industrial Excellence Award 2020/2021.

He said the award recognises outstanding Sabah companies and encourage continuous improvement in their products and services.

"It is hoped that the industries would be able to maintain the ability to increase their productivity by combining existing production resources and increase their competitiveness in order to take the respective industries to the global level," he added.
