16/01/2021 12:30 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 -- Sweden and Malaysia have jointly launched the Digital Health Innovation Challenge, inviting local start-ups to help address the prevalence of non-communicable diseases in the country.

The initiative is a collaboration between Team Sweden comprising the Embassy of Sweden, Business Sweden and AstraZeneca and Team Malaysia comprising Sunway iLabs, Malaysian Global Innovation and Creativity Centre (MaGIC) and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

In a joint statement today, the partners said the innovation challenge aims to identify solutions that can empower non-communicable diseases patients and high-risk communities to proactively reduce the risk factors of these diseases by encouraging healthy living and increase accessibility to digital tools enabling self-care and monitoring.

Swedish Trade Commissioner to Malaysia Sara Hedin said the challenge is a great opportunity for start-ups to explore solutions from multiple angles and to work with partners to exchange knowledge and scale-up across borders.

“The selected start-ups will get access to incubation programmes, global innovation networks, mentorship and funding, and an opportunity to collaborate with the partners to solve healthcare challenges in Malaysia,” she added.

Sunway Bhd chief innovation officer and director of Sunway Innovation Labs, Matt Van Leeuwen said it is of utmost importance that the public and private sector come together to solve huge societal problems that affect mankind.

“I believe that this initiative is a great example on how we can accelerate market-driven healthcare innovations from talented entrepreneurs by leveraging corporate testbeds and international networks,” he added.

The application is open from Jan 15 until Feb 15, 2021, and may be made via the Digital Health Innovation Challenge Application Form.
