ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION IN COMMERCIAL, INDUSTRIAL SECTORS RECOVERING

31/05/2020 10:27 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, June 31 -- Electricity consumption in the commercial and industrial sectors in Peninsular Malaysia is showing signs of recovery in line with the gradual reopening of the economy, following the positive developments in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) chief retail officer Megat Jalaluddin Megat Hassan said electricity consumption in the two economic sectors had decreased by between 25 per cent and 50 per cent during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period.

“However, in the past two weeks, we saw a slight increase in consumption as the commercial sector resumes operations,” he said in an interview on Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s morning talkshow programme, Selamat Pagi Malaysia.

Megat Jalaluddin said during the MCO, residential electricity consumption increased by up to 50 per cent as many Malaysians started staying in and working from home.

Meanwhile, he said TNB has introduced an easy payment scheme which allows customers to settle their outstanding electricity bills in instalments until December this year.

"Consumers can choose to pay monthly instalments or make full payments, and there is no surcharge on the instalments," he added.
