KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 -- Shopee Malaysia saw about RM250,000 worth of sales of agricultural and fisheries products via its Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA) and National Fishermen’s Association (NEKMAT) online agrobazaar.
The online agrobazaar was set up in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries through FAMA, NEKMAT and the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia, as a long-term measure to protect the welfare of farmers and fishermen.
Shopee Malaysia’s head of Fast-Moving Consumer Goods Tan Ming Kit said since it was set up last month, the online agrobazaar received close to 2,000 orders from around the Klang Valley.
“Currently, Klang Valley residents who place their orders before 12pm will receive their products the following day, except during weekends and public holidays,” he told the media at FAMA’s Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur/Putrajaya office here yesterday.
He said if the demand increases, the e-commerce platform is ready to engage in discussions to negotiate for a more efficient and faster delivery times.
Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industries Datuk Seri Dr Ronald Kiandee said adapting to the new normal is not only for consumers, but also for farmers, entrepreneurs and fishermen.
"That is the nature of e-commerce, where you have to order online and the delivery is made within a specific time period.
“The delivery times can be improved through in-depth discussions as it involves many parties -- industry players, platform operators and logistic partners,” he said.
The initiative is expected to be expanded nationwide, which would have a positive impact on the livelihoods of 1,500 local farmers, 100 agribusiness entrepreneurs under FAMA and 56,000 fishermen.
