KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 -- The Alliance for a Safe Community is expecting the second economic stimulus package, to be unveiled tomorrow, to be more comprehensive and people-oriented.

Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said among key measures expected is cash handout for six months to those who are hardest hit by the pandemic and the Movement Control Order (MCO) such as hawkers, petty traders, self-employed people and taxi drivers.

"It is also my hope that this second economic package will introduce some very urgent measures to help the low-income group tide over their difficulties," he told Bernama.

He said the government should also look into the plight of the employees that are worried over a possible retrenchment during this very critical period.

“If employers are compelled to lay off their workers due to business disruptions and loss of revenue, it will result in the emergence of social problems due to higher unemployment,” he said.

To prevent such scenario, Lee said, the government should introduce a plan that can help employers from having to resort to retrenchment exercises.

On COVID-19, Lee said the government has done a great job in tackling the pandemic amid an unprecedented event happening in the country.

He also advised Malaysians to fully comply with the MCO.

"So far, the police have mentioned that they're seeing good progress of 90 per cent. Hopefully, this week we will be able to achieve 100 per cent compliance," he said.

The government is set to unveil another multi-billion ringgit stimulus on Friday to ease the financial burden of almost all segments of the society following the enforcement of the MCO due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The urgency to introduce the second package, expected to be bigger than the RM20 billion first stimulus package, is reflected by the fact that Malaysia has reported 2,031 COVID-19 positive cases, the highest in Southeast Asia.
