KUALA LUMPUR, March 26 -- Livestock supplier Harris Luqman Group Sdn Bhd (HLG) is working hard to ensure that Malaysian consumers continue to have a regular supply of meat and asks them to avoid panic buying.
The company said it has defied all odds to import an urgent shipment of sheep breeds and meat stock in the midst of supply chain concerns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Driven by the urgency of stepping up meat supply for local consumption, the company’s flew an air cargo of 1,400 live sheep from Australia.
The flight MH6422, which took off from Perth on Monday, landed at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at 7 am on Tuesday.
The livestock will be distributed in the Klang Valley and designated areas under the government livestock breeding programme.
An HLG representative told Bernama that the company is anticipating more air shipments of livestock next week.
He said about 40 per cent of the livestock would be allocated for the breeding programme.
Meanwhile, HLG general manager Faisal Husin, in a statement, said there is absolutely no need for panic buying.
He said the company is confident of being able to continue to keep the livestock supply chain between the two countries running for the benefit of the industry and consumers in the country.
“We commend the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Department of Veterinary Services for their assistance in ensuring the prompt approval during the Movement Control Order (MCO), as well as the Australian government for expediting the approval of export permits.
“This initiative by the company has ensured that farmers, as well as livestock and meat traders will continue to have a regular supply at any time when demand is getting back to normal,” Faisal said.
HLG is one of the main importers of livestock via air cargo in Malaysia and has been involved in sourcing, supplying and delivering livestock to customers in Southeast Asia.
