IILM appoints new CEO

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 -- The International Islamic Liquidity Management Corporation (IILM) has appointed of Dr Umar Aimhanosi Oseni as the new chief executive officer (CEO) for a two-year tenure, effective Jan 1, 2020.

In a statement, IILM said prior to this, Umar was the acting CEO of IILM since Sept 15, 2018.

He joined IILM as the executive director, legal & compliance and general counsel of IILM in 2016. Before joining IILM, he was an associate professor at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

As the CEO, Umar will report to IILM’s governing board and the board executive committee.

He has diverse experience, and has consulted for law firms and banks in the areas of law and regulation in Islamic finance, including on legal aspects of sukūk structuring for the Islamic Development Bank Group.

Umar was a research fellow at the International Sharī‘ah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA) and a resource person on Islamic micro-finance for the United Nations (UN)-Habitat – the UN agency for human settlement.

He was also part of a consultancy team commissioned by the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC) to produce reports on risk management in Islamic financial instruments and improving the takaful sector in Islamic countries.

Umar holds a PhD in law from IIUM and was a visiting fellow at the Harvard Law School’s Islamic Legal Studies Programme, specialising in law and regulation of Islamic finance. He is also active in research and has published books relating to Islamic finance law and financial technology (fintech).
