SME CORP TO CONTINUE TUBE PROGRAMME

23/10/2018 06:36 PM

MELAKA, Oct 23 (Bernama) -- SME Corporation Malaysia (SME Corp), which has been placed under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development (MED), will continue to implement the Bumiputera Budding Youth Entrepreneurship (Tube) programme in the quest to create more Bumiputera youth entrepreneurs.

Its Deputy Chief Executive Officer II, Mohd Rithaudden Makip said the assurance was given by Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Redzuan Yusof who wanted the agency to continue conducting entrepreneurship development programmes, including Tube.

He said this was in line with the mid-term review of the 11th Malaysia Plan's (2016-2020) presented by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad recently, which emphasised the economic development of small and medium enterprises.

“Tube, which has entered its fourth series, will continue to give exposure and shift as expected by Tun Mahathir in minting new youth entrepreneurs," he told reporters at the Tube @ Melaka Workshop here today.

SME Corp, which was previously under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, was placed under MED on Oct 1.

Melaka Agriculture, Entrepreneur Development and Agro-Based Industry Committee Chairman Norhizam Hassan Baktee, who attended the event, also held a 30-minute dialogue with more than 30 Tube participants.

Mohd Rithaudden said since its launch in 2014 until Aug 31, 2018, the Tube programme has produced 4,396 of Bumiputera youth entrepreneurs in various business sectors out of 4,422 participants, boasting accumulated sales of RM88.1 million.

He said the Tube Programme has created 6,679 jobs, as well as provided opportunities for disabled people to participate in entrepreneurship through entrepreneurial technical facilities and training.

The pioneer programme for the disabled was started this year with the participation of 50 people in collaboration with the Welfare Department and the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, he added.

He said SME Corp aimed to produce about 5,000 Bumiputera youth entrepreneurs next year compared with 2,000 this year but this would depend on the 2019 Budget allocation.
