Peka urges Penang state government to stop all hillside development

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 20 (Bernama) – Pertubuhan Pelindung Khazanah Alam Malaysia (Peka) today urged the Penang state government to stop all hillside development immediately in light of the recent fatal landslide in Bukit Kukus.

Its president Puan Seri Shariffa Sabrina Syed Akil in a statement here said although the actual reasons behind the latest landslide are yet to be ascertained, it is clear that rampant development of Penang’s hills and slopes is a foolhardy venture that has and will continue to result in fatal incidents.....

Landslide: four bodies found after over 24 hours


GEORGE TOWN, Oct 20 (Bernama) -- After two days in the search and rescue (SAR) for victims of the landslide tragedy at Jalan Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong here, four bodies were found, three were found safe while five others are feared to be still buried in the debris.

Two killed, one injured, at least 10 feared buried alive in landslide


The incident , which occurred at 1.56 pm following a downpour in the state since yesterday, caused at least seven containers and a “kongsi” houses to slide  about 50 metres down with the debris. However, the actual number has yet to be ascertained.

We do not know what actually happened here but certainly it shows the risk involved when you tamper with nature. Now we know that our monitoring capacity is so weak and this should serve as a wake-up call for the state government and they should not continue to say it is a construction site accident after this.
