Labuan girl's rugby team upbeat on chances in National 7s

Last Update: 11/09/2019

LABUAN, Sept 11 -- Federal Territories rugby girl's squad chef-de-mission Abdul Rashid Adlie is optimistic that his young charges can achieve positive results in the 2019 National 7s in Ipoh, Perak this weekend.

The former Borneo's best rugby player said while several other teams are the hot favourites to win the two-day tournament by virtue of being top seeds, the federal territories’ players could rise to the occasion for at least a top three finish.

“Despite having a slight advantage over other teams as our two players are now under training for SUKMA and out in this tournament... definitely, I will be relying on three to four players to get the points as they also have vast experience in many major tournaments in the past," he told Bernama at his squad's final preparation at Dataran Labuan here today.

The federal territories rugby squad is being represented by Labuan Rugby Association (LRA) players and coached by Wan Ibrahim Wan Chik, who is also the chief coach of the SUKMA Federal Territories Rugby Team.

"Our main aim is to compete and play to our fullest as this is one of the tournaments in line with our development programme for the Labuan girls' team.

"If the girls are able to finish the tournament with gold for the Federal Territory contingent, it is an accomplishment for LRA," he said.

The National 7’s Tournament kicks off on Sept 14 at the Ipoh Padang.
