Penang gov't ready to assist schools to start aquaponics farming

Last Update: 30/08/2019

BUKIT MERTAJAM, August 30  -- The Penang Government is prepared to assist any school in the state which require funds to start aquaponics farming, an environmental-friendly agriculture method, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said today.

He said interested schools could approach the Penang Science Cluster (PSC), an organisation under the State government which promotes Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education, for assistance.

“Over the years, many schools have already set up their laboratories (through PSC assistance) and they may consider venturing further by setting up farms which promote awareness of food security and reducing waste,” he said after touring a farm run by Aquaponics Science Park Sdn Bhd here.

"Aquaponics is one of the answers to (address) our ordeal of food security and to create a sustainable future, where our food source is grown locally in a safer, greener and  healthier way," he said.

Meanwhile, Aquaponics Science Park director Goh Toh Sin welcomed the state government's commitment to this initiative which could shape the next generation and create a healthy society, and leaders who appreciate the environment and concern about food security and sustainable agriculture.

“We also hope more corporate organisations would come forward to start this initiative as part of their CSR (corporate social responsibility) programme,” he added.
