Terengganu weighlifting squad win National Championships

KUALA TERENGGANU, June 28 (Bernama) -- The Terengganu weightlifting squad featured a brilliant performance at the 2019 National Weightlifting Championship Circuit 1 in Kuching, Sarawak which ended yesterday, emerging the overall champions of both the junior and senior categories

In the tournament participated by 118 athletes from 13 teams nationwide at The Spring shopping centre, Terengganu topped the medal table, winning 24 gold, 24 silver and nine bronze.

The Sabah contingent finished second, while Sarawak came in third.

To put the icing on the cake, five Terengganu athletes created new national records in the five-day event which began on June 23.

Terengganu Weightlifting Association president Mohd Shafaruddin Mustaffa said the new records were set in the 109kg-category through Norfarhan Ideris; Muhammad Azfar Kamaruddin (81kg); Syahir Mat Tera (96kg); Muhammad Ikram Haikal Muhammad Zuari (73kg); and Muhammad Saiful Irfan Abd Rahim (73kg).

"Norfarhan set the record in the clean & jerk, lifting 177kg, while Muhammad Azfar made it in the same event with 164kg," he said in a statement today.

Mohd Syahir made a new record in the clean & jerk, lifting 156 kg load while Muhammad Ikram Haikal created a new record in the snatch event with a lift total of 122kg.

"The fifth record was created by Muhammad Saiful Irfan in the clean & jerk event lifting 160kg," he said.
