Last Update: 06/03/2019

JOHOR BAHRU, March 5 (Bernama) -- Malaysian National News Agency’s (Bernama) Johor Bureau, won three awards at the 2018 Johor Media Awards in a ceremony held at Persada Johor International Convention Centre, here tonight.

It was a double win for part-time photographer Fathin Suhaira Abd Rahim when she received the Best News Photography Award through a photograph titled 'Bot Pancung Karam' and Best Sports Photography Award through a photograph titled 'Piala Malaysia 2018'.

Bureau chief, Nor Baizura Basri won the Best Development News Award for the Malay language category for her piece titled 'Adakan Kelas di Kem Dasar Tertinggi Everest, UTHM Cipta Rekod MBR'.

The winners of each category received RM2,000, a trophy and a certificate.

Present at the event were Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian, State Entrepreneur Development, Cooperative, Creative Economy and Information Committee chairman Sheikh Umar and Johor Media Club president Mohammad Fauzi Ishak.

Osman in his speech reminded media practitioners in the state to always be responsible and to think ahead of the impact their news would have on society and the community.

He said media practitioners should not be encouraged to publish or display news or photographs  which were doubtful and inaccurate or use misleading headlines to gain high readership.

Mohammad Fauzi in his speech said the Johor Media Award, formerly known as the Johor Journalism Award, was initiated by the Johor state government to give due recognition to the role of both the print and electronic media in delivering state-related news.

He said the Johor Media Club had been lucky to have received the attention and recognition from the Johor government  each year and hoped the recognition would continue in years to come.

"I believe the awards and recognition will raise the spirit of media practitioners to spur them to succeed in their career," he said.

A total of 232 entries were received for 34 categories in the Johor Media Awards this year.
