MMEA foils attempt to smuggle 3,300 pig-nosed turtles in Batu Pahat

Last Update: 27/02/2019

BATU PAHAT, Feb 27 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two individuals and seized seven parcels containing protected pig-nosed turtles believed to have been smuggled early this morning.

Batu Pahat MMEA Zone director commander (maritime) Mohammad Othman said that the team found 3,300 pig-nosed turtles during an inspection on a boat in Tanjung Tohor, near here at about 12.30am.

It was believed that the turtles were brought in from a neighbouring country for the local market and to be sold to exotic food lovers, he said.

“The total seizure including the boat has been estimated at RM150,000. The case has been referred to the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) for further action,” he said in a statement here today.

Mohammad Othman also urged the  public to report unlawful activities to 24-hour MERS 999 hotline or the Batu Pahat MMEA Zone operation centre at  07-4344 020.
