Tunku Ismail launches Chingay Parade Festival 2019

JOHOR BAHRU, Feb 25  (Bernama) --Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim launched the Chingay Parade Festival 2019 tonight at Jalan Wong Ah Fook here.

He arrived at the location at 9 pm, welcomed by chairman of the state Women Development and Tourism committee Liow Cai Tung and president of the Johor Bahru Tionghua Association Datuk Seri Tey Kim Chai.

Tunku Ismail then performed the symbolic gesture of starting the festival by hitting the drums on the main stage.

The festival which is in its 149th year is significant to the Chinese community here as it symbolises the strong community spirit between the five dialects, which are Teochew, Hokkien, Hakka, Guangsiew and Hainan.

Chingay is celebrated each year on the 21st day of the first month of the Chinese lunar calendar.
