ISKANDAR PUTERI, Jan 27 (Bernama) – Two national hockey players, defender Faiz Helmi and goalkeeper Farah Ayuni Yahya, were declared Johor Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year respectively at the Johor Sports Awards 2017 here last night.
The Batu Pahat-born Faiz had also won the award in 2013.
“I didn’t expect to win this time because the competition was stiff. Perhaps I was nominated because there were many international tournaments in 2017.
“Thank you Johor Sports Council (JSC) for helping me all these while in my overseas stints and helping others like me to bring glory to Johor and the country,” he told Bernama after receiving his award at Pinewood Studio.
Faiz and national No.1 woman goalkeeper Farah Ayuni, whose nickname is ‘Ninja’ and who was named the Best Goalkeeper at the 2016 World League Round Two, each received a challenge trophy and RM7,000 cash from Menteri Besar Datuk Osman Sapian.
Also present were state Youth, Sports and Culture Committee chairman Mohd Khuzzan Abu Bakar, JSC director Mohd Gadaffie Abd Aziz and state Secretary Datuk Azmi Rohani.
Osman, in his speech, said the award provided a healthy competition among the athletes.
“The recognition accorded to the athletes today is a show of appreciation from the state government and JSC,” he said.
At the ceremony, mixed martial arts exponent Jihin Radzuan, who is also known as ‘Shadow Cat’, received the Special Jury Award while former JSC director Mohd Syukri Mohd Masbah was declared the Sports Personality.
