Quick reaction of fire personnel shortens hikers' ordeal

Last Update: 24/01/2019

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- The speedy action of the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel and technological  advancement in communications helped shorten the ordeal of seven hikers who were lost in Bukit Cherok Tokun here today.

Penang JBPM operations officer Mohd Azmi Zakaria, who confirmed the incident, said the hikers comprising four women and three men in their 20s, began their ascent at about 10.00am before realising they were lost some three hours later.

"About an hour after they failed to find a way out, one of them made an emergency call to us and we immediately mounted a SAR (search and rescue) operation using a four-wheel drive vehicle," he said when contacted here.

He said the hikers who were found safe at 3.59pm at a 350-metre height of the forest area were brought down and arrived at Dataran Bukit Cherok Tokun half an hour later.
