RM1.14 million to upgrade 22 mission schools in Penang

Last Update: 05/01/2019

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 5 (Bernama) -- The Penang government has approved RM1.14 million for upgrading works on 22 mission schools in the state, says Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

He said most of the schools would use their allocations to repair structural defects as well as for upgrading and renovation works.

“It may not be much but I hope the allocation can help lighten their burden, especially in ensuring the comfort and safety of their students,” he said at a ceremony to present mock cheques to the mission schools here today.

He said although education was not under the state government’s jurisdiction, it would still provide appropriate assistance and priority to needy schools.

“The state government has, for the last 10 years, aimed to take education towards the digital era based on the concept of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and make Penang the centre of excellence for science and technology,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chow also said that the Penang Digital Library (PDL-2) would be operational soon as the state government had spent RM10.8 million to expand its capacity to accommodate about 540 people at any one time for any activity or programme.
