Last Update: 03/01/2019

SITIAWAN, Jan 3 (Bernama) -- The Perak Fisheries Department seized 10 gunny sacks of cockle seeds worth RM6,000 in an operation conducted at the Kampung Acheh jetty here yesterday.

Kampung Acheh Resources Protection Branch (CPS) chief Mansor Yobe said the  department received a complaint on illegal harvesting of cockle seeds on the Sungai Tiram sands earlier in the morning.

“The raid was conducted at about 1pm with the assistance of the marine police force,” he said adding that the seeds were about to be smuggled into southern Thailand.

"At the site we saw several men acting suspiciously but they escaped into the nearby mangrove swamp and left their catch there.

"The 10 gunny sacks of cockle seeds estimated at RM6,000 were taken to Kampung Acheh CPS for further action," he said in a statement here today.

The case is being investigated under Article 3(1) of the Fisheries (Cockles Conservation and Culture) Regulations 2002.
