A1 Team Malaysia Heads To Portugal

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 19 (Bernama) -- Former F1 driver Alex Yoong and Fairuz Fauzy who spearhead Malaysia's challenge in the A1 Grand Prix will head to the Portugal A1 GP this weekend.

For Alex and Fairuz, it will be their first visit to the Estoril Circuit in Portugal and both will fall back on their track knowledge derived from watching Formula One races held there, on television.

Alex, who competed in the last round of the series held in Germany, came in a reputable sixth in the first of the two races.

Fauzy, who will take all the driving responsibilities at Estoril, said he was very excited about the prospect of featuring in both the sprint and feature races at the circuit.

"I had always wanted to drive in this circuit," he said in a statement released by A1 Team Malaysia here Wednesday.

Alex, boosted by his strong performance in Germany, said: "We'll be working hard as a team to continue scoring points. I hope it will be the venue for a strong showing from the team with Fairuz leading the charge for us."

Team Principal Jack Cunningham said Fairuz would do all the driving in Estoril while Alex would take charge in Australia.

"We will be assessing how this strategy will work over the coming two races," he said.

The A1 Grand Prix of Nations in Portugal takes place on Oct 21-23 and the Australian race in Sydney is scheduled for early November before the drivers head for the Sepang Circuit for the Malaysian edition on Nov 18-20.
