PASIR PUTEH, March 5 (Bernama) -- The Fisheries Department has introduced a "Fish Best" logo for fish-based products from small and medium scale industries to help them penetrate overseas markets.

Fisheries Director-General Datuk Junaidi Che Ayub said the logo would be used as verification from the department on the quality of the products.

"Only quality products will bear the Fish Best logo", he added.

To be able to use the logo, he said the SMI operators would have to comply with certain requirements which included attending certain courses and not to use prohibited items in preparation of their products.

The factories must also comply with the conditions set by the department, he added.

Speaking to reporters after launching the "Fish Best" logo at a "keropok" (fish crackers) factory at Kampung Gajah Mati here today, he said the department would hold more exhibitions overseas, especially in Muslim countries, to help SMI operators promote their fish-based products.

Juhaidi said curently, only a small number of SMI products were able to penetrate the world market because their quality did not meet international standards.

He said the department hoped to produce 130 SMI operators with calibre under the Ninth Malaysia Plan adding that this was in line with the government's objective to have an annual production of two million metric tonnes of fish-based products.
