KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 6 (Bernama) -- Bank Muamalat Malaysia Berhad (BMMB) emerged champion in the banking language under the Islamic banking category in an assessment made on 11 Islamic banks in conjunction with the National Language Month and Language and Arts Festival 2009 held recently.

The evaluation, made by a committee under the supervision of Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka and Bank Negara, Malaysia reviewed the usage of the National Language in daily communications by banks in public or internal.

The review was made on the extent of the National Language usage in publicity materials such as leaflets, annual reports, text of speeches, signages, websites, advertisements and in daily banking transactions with customers, said BMMB in a statement.

Deputy Minister of Education Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong gave away the prizes.

In his speech, Wee said the National Language Month, which has been turned into an annual event, has been adopted as a national agenda in government's efforts to strengthen and honour the National Language as a knowledge and race-building language.

Bank Muamalat Consumer Banking Division senior vice-president Azaddin Ngah Tasir said the bank's victory reflected its strong emphasis on the usage of the National Language in all banking transactions.

Established on Oct 1, 1999, BMMB is a fully Islamic Banking institution operating under the Islamic Banking Act 1983.
