HSBC Awards RM530,000 In Scholarships

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 (Bernama) -- HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd, today awarded RM530,000 in scholarships to 25 undergraduates and four post-graduate students in local public universities and colleges.

Its deputy chairman and chief executive officer, Irene M Dorner, said the recipients were selected from a total of nearly 600 applications received for the HSBC Scholarship Awards scheme.

"By investing in education, we seek to provide opportunities to those who might otherwise miss out on the chance to strive for a better life," she said in her speech before the presentation of the scholarships here.

She said the twenty-nine recipients of the scholarship awards also include children of two HSBC employees.

Launched in 2002, 205 deserving students have to date received scholarship awards of more than RM3.9 million.
