Strengthening Regional Ties Key To Protecting Asean & Singapore's Interest, Singapore FM

SINGAPORE, March 9 (Bernama) -- Strengthening regional relationships is key to protecting Asean and Singapore's interests in this unpredictable environment, says Minister for Foreign Affairs K Shanmugam.

He said Asean reflects as well as mitigates diversities inherent in the region - it is strategically vital to Singapore as a buffer as well as an influence multiplier.

Shanmugam said this in Parliament during the Committee of Supply Debate on Friday. He was responding to questions when asked about the recent developments in the region, including the South China Sea dispute, and the implications for Singapore and Asean.

According to the Minister, 2012 was not a year that Asean could be particularly proud of.

"Its unity and credibility were painfully tested by the South China Sea issue during Cambodia's chairmanship.....
