SYDNEY, April 16 (Bernama) -- Thousands of homes in northern parts of Australia's southern island state of Tasmania were left without electricity on Monday due to severe weather conditions.
State-owned electricity operator TasNetworks was working to fix the national grid but it was unclear when the electricity would be restored, Xinhua news agency reported.
Some 3,000 homes were hit by outages overnight as howling winds of up to 70 km per hour uprooted several trees which toppled power lines.
"A low pressure system and a cold front passed through the south of Tasmania this morning. We experienced gusty winds and don't expect them to ease today," said a spokesperson for the Tasmanian Bureau of Meteorology.
The '´wild weather'´ is not unusual for Tasmania at this time of the year.....
