TOKYO, March 6 (Bernama) -- Mount Shinmoe on Japan's southwestern main island of Kyushu erupted violently on Tuesday, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said.

Mount Shinmoe, which straddles Kagoshima and Miyazaki prefectures, erupted at about 2.30 pm local time, China's Xinhua news agency reported.

The 1,421 metre high volcano, located in Kirishima mountain range, spewed plumes of smoke and volcanic ash some 2,100 metres from its crater.
