SEOUL, Jan 13 (Bernama) -- Samsung Electronics Co. said its new washer factory in the United States began operations Saturday to meet growing demand in the North American region, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.
With the launch of production at the factory in Newberry County, South Carolina, the South Korean tech giant plans to gradually expand the plant's facilities and its output to about 1 million units of washers annually by 2020. Samsung said its total investment in the plant will reach US$380 million.
The opening came as South Korea is pushing to keep the US from imposing import restrictions on its large home washing machines.
In November, the US International Trade Commission recommended a 50 per cent tariff rate on imports of large Samsung and LG home washers built beyond the 1.2-million-unit threshold.
The recommendation was in response to a safeguard petition filed by US-based Whirlpool in May. The commission determined that the Samsung and LG washers were having an adverse impact on the domestic industry.....
