KUALA LUMPUR, March 8 (Bernama) -- National top men's doubles pair, Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong got off to a flying start by advancing to the second round in the German Open Badminton Tournament in Mulheim-An-Der-Rhur, Germany on Tuesday (early Wednesday Malaysian Time).
The 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallists, however, had to sweat before securing a 21-16, 17-21 and 21-16 win over unseeded Japanese pair, Hiroyuki Endo-Yuta Watanabe in the first round match at Innogy Sporthalle, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website;www.bwfbadminton.com.
Another Malaysian pair, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi put up a stiff competition against the fourth seeds, Lee Jhe-Huei-Lee Yang of Taiwan before losing 21-17, 15-21 and 20-22.
National top mixed doubles pair, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying who are also the sixth seeds, faced the same fate after they suffered an unexpected 19-21 and 18-21 defeat to unheralded Indonesian pair, Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti in the opening round match.
The country's interest in the women's singles came to an end after two only players left standing - Goh Jin Wei and Soniia Cheah - were beaten by their respective opponents in their opening round ties.....
