KUALA LUMPUR, March 7 (Bernama) -- National mixed doubles pair, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai kicked off their campaign with a winning start by advancing to the second round in the German Open Badminton Tournament in Mulheim-An-Der-Rhur, Germany on Tuesday (early Wednesday Malaysian Time).
The third seeded pair, however, received a stiff competition from the Magee siblings ? Sam and Chloe of Ireland before securing a 15-21, 21-17 and 21-17 win in the opening round at Innogy Sporthalle, according to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) website;www.bwfbadminton.com.
Another Malaysian pair, fourth seeded Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing, however, crashed out of the competition after suffering an unexpected 17-21 and 13-21 defeat to Niclas Nohr-Sara Thygesen of Denmark in another opening round tie.
A few other Malaysian pairs will be in action in the opening round later today including 2016 Rio Olympics silver medallists Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong and also the national top mixed doubles pair of Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying.
Malaysia did not send any representatives in the men's singles and also the women's doubles in the US$150,000 (RM585,392) tournament.....
