KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- Despite having excellent track record in every Commonwealth Games, the national badminton squad still needs to be wary of rivals from emerging teams such as India and England at the 2018 edition of the Games which will be held in Gold Coast, Australia from April 4 to 15.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games chef de mission, Huang Ying How said the Olympic badminton line-up would be the main hope for the national contingent to contribute gold at the Games.
"It is undeniable that the performance of the badminton squad in all Commonwealth Games had been excellent. However, there may be more fierce competition this time around and they should not take it lightly with rivals from India, England and Singapore.
"At the same time we cannot rely just based on history, players have to play hard. (National) badminton players are experienced squad, most of them are Olympic athletes," he told reporters after visiting the Malaysian Badminton Academy in Bukit Kiara here today.
For the record, the badminton squad has bagged three gold medals in men's doubles, women doubles and team events at the 2014 edition in Scotland.....
