KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 23 (Bernama) -- The national weightlifting squad faces two major responsibilities at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia. - to defend the gold medal won by Hafifi Mansor, and become the first medal contributing squad at the Games.
As all eyes are on Muhammad Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad in his inaugural appearance at the Games, he, nevertheless, has a tough task of achieving the target set by the national contingent, replacing Hafifi, the gold medallist in Glasgow, Scotland in 2014.
The 24-year-old who will compete in the 56kg category admitted he felt pressured when Hafifi was disqualified from attending the Games, following a ban for using the anabolic steroid oxymetholone.
"Previously, the association targeted two gold medals through Hafifi and me, but now the main focus is on me. Definitely, there is pressure, but I am confident of being able to face the challenge.
"Personally, I am targeting the gold. Words of encouragement from my idol, Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim to improve on his record set 16 years ago is the driving force for me," he told reporters after a Podium Programme press conference at the National Science Institute (ISN) here.....
