Liew Darren Ready To Lead Country's Medal Charge In Glasgow

KUALA LUMPUR, July 10 (Bernama) -- Shuttler Liew Darren who has been given the task to lead the country's mission in the badminton competition of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in the absence of world number one Datuk Lee Chong Wei is ready to accept the challenge.

Liew Darren who captained the Thomas Cup team that reached the final will step into the shoes of Chong Wei who had to withdraw due to an aggravated thigh injury, during training.

"I do not regard the task as a burden but as an opportunity to play to my full potential and hopefully reach the final. It will not add any unnecessary pressure on me," he told reporters when met at the flag handing ceremony for the Malaysian contingent for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, here today.

Chong Wei, the defending champion and two-time Olympics silver medallist aggravated a thigh injury during training and receives treatment at the National Sports Institute (NSI).

Liew Darren who was criticized for failing to deliver the crucial winning point during the Thomas Cup final against Japan, hopes to meet compatriot Chong Wei Feng in the final to ensure Malaysia are assured of the gold medal.....
