MELAKA, June 16 (Bernama) -- People with special needs in the country, especially the younger generation, should be given exposure and opportunities in the field of sports to boost their confidence, said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron.
He said psychological studies find these people are more likely to feel inferior in all respects.
"This is one reason why in Malaysia it is difficult to find new talent among people with special needs, in the field of sports," he said when opening the 18th Malaysia Sports for the Deaf (SOPMA) at the Hang Tuah Stadium here last night.
A total of 728 athletes and officials from 16 countries, including Brunei and Singapore, would be taking part in the various sports contested, namely football, futsal, badminton, bowling, athletics and netball, were contested.
The nine-day tournament is aimed at finding and providing opportunities for athletes who are deaf but with potential to represent the country in the Asia Pacific Deaf Sports and the Olympic Games for the Deaf.....
