KANGAR, June 3 (Bernama) -- The Perak hockey squad ended a 22-year drought for a gold medal at the Malaysia Games (Sukma).
The last time Perak won a gold medal in the men's hockey event was at the Johor Sukma edition in 1992 and the last time they made it to the final was at the Pahang edition in 1996.
Today's hockey final in the 17th edition of the Sukma hosted by Perlis at the Tuanku Syed Putra Compex Hockey Pitch, which was also witnessed by the Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin and Youth and Sport Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, saw Perak in a class of its own when they thrashed Negeri Sembilan 6-0.
"We dedicate this gold medal to the late Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak, who had endeavoured to develop hockey in Perak," said Perak coach, Mohd Nizam Mohd Hashim.
"The players demonstrated their true potential while those who were rested due to injuries were also fielded today," he added.....
