Penang's 14-year-old Shuttler Reaps Women's Singles Gold

KANGAR, June 3 (Bernama) -- Fourteen-year-old athlete, Goh Jin Wei sprang a surprise by beating Yang Li Lian in the Women's badminton singles at the 17th Malaysia Games (Sukma), here.

Jin Wei, who represented Penang, showed grit and tenacity to grab the gold medal for the event at the Syed Putra Complex's Tennis Court.

The youngest finalist, however, lost the first set 20-22 to Li Lian of Selangor, who is a national athlete, but fought back in the second and third sets with 22-20, 21-15.

"I really didn't expect to beat Li Lian, she is an experienced player. The competition today was stiff but I am satisfied that in the end I was able to improve on my performance at the 2012 Sukma in Pahang.

"Prior to this, I lost in the heats. Becoming champion this time is the most meaningful thing to me. Thanks to the state association and the coaches who guided me," she told reporters.....
