Sarawakian Sanjay, Penangite Vanessa Raj Smash Their Way To Gold Medals In Squash

KANGAR, May 26 (Bernama) -- Sanjay Singh Chal of Sarawak and Vaneesa Raj of Penang clinched the men's and women's singles squash gold medals in the SUKMA at the Tuanku Syed Putra Sports Complex, here Monday.

In the final match held at the Tuanku Syed Putra Sports Complex squash courts, Sanjay, 20, started off brilliantly, winning the first and second games 11-4, 11-6 before Muhammad Syafiq Mohd Kamal of Kelantan took the third game 12-10 but bounced back to win the deciding fourth game 12-10 to take the title.

Muhammad Adden Indra Baktiar of Selangor took the bronze after beating Muhammad Hannan Muhammad Tarmid of Negeri Sembilan 11-8, 11-5, 9-11, 11-4.

"I'm happy to have won but it was not an easy match because Syafiq gave me a tough fight, especially after winning the third game. I told myself to keep going and pushing hard. I just kept my focus on the fourth game," he told reporters here today.

Meanwhile, Vanessa Raj put up a splendid performance to beat Rachel Mae Arnold from the Federal Territories 11-2, 7-11, 15-13, 12-14, 11-8 after a five-set thriller to win her maiden SUKMA gold medal.....
